repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation rTMS
rTMS is a High Tech Therapy for Depression, Brain and mind related conditions. FDA and CU approved
rTMS improves mood, memory, executive functions, reduces impulsive behavior, cravings for alcohol & drugs; modifies behavior; relieves chronic pains; restores speech and action in stroke victims.
It is safe, simple, non invasive, a walk in procedure. No anaesthesia is required. Side effects if any following rTMS are negligible.
rTMS is needed most if you are getting unsatisfactory results from anti depressant medication, side effects with medications or if you need more than one medication or if affected by side effects .
A special magnetic coil applied over scalp generates a small and gentle electro magnetic wave that activates nerve cells in the particular region of the brain connected with thinking, planning, organizing, feeling and execution. This part is under-active in many conditions.
Depression: rTMS is a Life saver in Depression and in those with suicidal tendencies where the results are quick.
Schizophrenia: Found effective in clearing Auditory hallucinations, lack of interest/pleasure/energy /motivation and social withdrawal
Children: ADHD & Autism
Eating Disorders like Anorexia or Bulaemia, Obesity due to Eating disorders.
Neurological conditions such as: Parkinson’s disease, Stroke, Post stroke Speech loss, headaches ( Migraine, cluster, primary headaches)
rTMS FAQs
1. What are the Side effects? The only side effect is Mild headache lasting 5-10 minutes. rTMS is 50-100 times safer than treatment with medication. Long term follow up of 2, 3, 4 and 10 years declare the safety of rTMS. No late onset problems have been reported. 2. What is the risk of fits with rTMS? It is 1 in 30,000 chance and only 2 cases have been reported since 2008. 3. How soon the results are seen? Many patients experience results in 1-2 weeks of treatment while some late responders may feel the change only by third week. In some conditions, the results are evident immediately. 4. Is there any need for long term maintenance? Occasional few may require a follow up of few sessions after a period of 6 months. 5. What are the success rates of rTMS? Full recovery- 35 % 50% recovery- 35% 6. What is the cost? The cost varies depending on the protocol for the said complaint and packages are available at much reduced cost. 7. How long do the results last? rTMS induces lasting changes in the brain function. However some may need periodic recharge sessions. 8. How does rTMS differ from shock treatment? i) rTMS uses 500 times less current ( 0.002amp as against 1 amp of ECT at 450 volts) ii) No anaesthesia is required and in a walk in session iii) rTMS improves memory where as ECT impairs memory 9. How does one feel during treatment? The patient feels and hears a series of clicking, tapping sounds. No pain is felt. 10. List of conditions where rtMS is used:
